This company, originally known as "Buncombe Rangers" was organised for the war at Asheville, Buncombe County, beginning May 20, 1861. It was initially composed of men from Buncombe County. The company remained at Camp Woodfin, Asheville, where it was joined by three other companies in early July, 1861. About August 1, 1861, the companies at Asheville were moved to Camp Beauregard at Ridgeway, Warren County. This camp has been designated as a regular school of cavalry instruction and it was here that the 9th Regiment N. C. State Troops (1st Regiment N.C. Cavalry) was formed on August 12, 1861. After that date the company functioned as a part of the regiment, and it´s history for the war is recorded as a part of the regimental history.
